Annie Andersen is a Pollyanna with a ukulele, someone you think of in a Crohn’s disease commercial, not fighting crime as the dork knight.

So when Annie, broke, returns home to discover the corrupt mayor has redrawn district lines to win the next election, only to leave a gap in police services to her hometown, she is forced to give up acting and take up doing , the work of the public trust.

After the theatre dork offspring (Skeet) of the dubious Mayor of Danville goes missing, Annie joins the Auxiliary Police to solve the mystery. Her team of cracker-jack suburban volunteers includes:

• Scoop, her old high-school crush , a progressive barista by day and a stripper cop by night.

• Race Bannon, a right-wing mall cop who patrols the Claire’s Accessories beat (and Scoop’s dad).

• Grousy Greta, Race’s emo daughter who wears protest fashion made in a sweatshop because of hipster irony; her mantra: Fk the patriarchy, but don’t fk the police ,at least not the Auxiliary Police.

• Karen White, Annie’s wealthy aunt, an upscale suburban schemer secretly vying for control of the town, hoping to erase years of unpaid HOA dues.

In a town split by red-and-blue-state sensibilities, Annie Andersen is Pollyanna with a badge and a ukulele, better suited for an audition for Crohn’s disease than fighting crime. But with lawlessness running rampant and trendy culture-vultures rioting over kale-chip shortages, Annie decides to stop acting and start doing.

She may be an auxiliary cop, but this police understudy is ready to protect her hometown — one pumpkin latte at a time.
